In addition, we have successfully passed the recent quality control performed by Lloyd’s Register LRQA.

What is special about the academic year in the USA J1?

Deciding to spend a season abroad is usually a thoughtful and important decision for both the family and the student. Deciding to do the academic year in the United States is usually a safe bet. Although before making the decision it is necessary to know that it is a subsidized program endorsed by the American government and it has its own peculiarities.

Unlike in other academic year programs such as in Ireland, if you do the J1 in the United States you can not choose the family where you will stay or school. It is the family that chooses you and depending on where the family is located, choose your school. These families are volunteers and do not charge for having you over and including you in their day to day activities.

However, the student can express their preferences. If your request for a specific State is met, you must make an extra payment.

How to enroll in the USA J1 academic year program?

In order to start the file and formalize the enrollment in the academic year program subsidized in the United States, you must send us the registration form and sign the documents accepting the General Conditions of the Program.

Once the registration form is received, we will arrange a meeting with the student and his/her parents/legal guardians for a personal or Skype interview and an English test.

Once we have your dossier ready, you will have to pay the amount of 1500 euros. The second payment should be made between April 1 and April 15, in the amount of 3000 euros and the rest of the program’s cost should be paid before the departure and the processing of the visa. We take care of the visa process.

Good level of English facilitates the integration and successful outcome of the program. Therefore, it is necessary for the student to pass a level test and a personal interview carried out in English. We recommend that you have at least B1 level of English.

Once all the documents have been reviewed and the candidate’s profile and file have been assessed, the student receives his acceptance letter to the program.

Documents needed to apply for the J1 program:

  • ID card
  • Passport
  • Photograph
  • Academic certificate
  • Previous course results

Local coordinators

We have local coordinators in all the destinations along the academic year. They are the people who will be attentive to the students at all times to solve any problem that may arise and help in everything. They will be there for you reachable by phone 24 hours per day.

In addition, the coordinator keeps track of the academic record and is in communication with the school’s faculty. The family receives a report with all the information related to their child (not only their academic record, but also other aspects of the program) on a monthly basis.

Medical assistance

Along their stay, all the students of the program have a health insurance. But we believe it not to be enough, so we have Civil Liability insurance included in the program.

In the event that the student needs medical assistance, he/she must inform both his/her host family and the local coordinator, who will be in charge of all the arrangements.

 Accommodation in the USA

Will I live in a host family?

Each family is carefully selected by the American Organization. They must meet the standards of a middle class family in the United States in order to get selected. Each and every one of the families that participate in this program, are volunteers and do not receive any financial compensation for opening the doors of their home to our students, that is, that the decision is free and voluntary. The family, you and the High School are the three pillars of this experience, that is why we put all our effort into making your relationship with them as good as possible.

We will advise you when it comes to preparing your dossier and, together, we will make your request unique and special that will serve as a useful tool to let your possible host families see you as a perfect candidate.

You will be considered as one more member of the family from the very first minute. You will spend a lot of time together with the family, learn their culture and their way of living as well as it will also be your guide during the first weeks and the rest of your stay. You will join the friends gatherings, participate in barbecues, help with house chores, you will comment your march in school, experience Halloween, celebrate Christmas together or eat turkey at Thanksgiving.

Of all the relationships you make in the US the one you will have with your host family will be the most special and longest, that is a connection you will have for life.

Who will help me during my stay?

Every day you will find “daily” problems on your way that you will have to face and probably solve by yourself with no need to ask for help. These situations are what will make you become more mature and grow as a person.

When you encounter situations you cannot solve on your own, your host family, your teachers, the school management, the local coordinator of the program and our team in Spain will be at your disposal to offer you the necessary help.

What about the validation of the course?

Prior to departure, there will be a meeting, where we will clarify all the important points to choose the subjects carefully during your stay in the USA and we will supervise that election during the first days of High School.

During your stay and once you have received our consent of your selection, you will only have to worry about passing your subjects. Moreover, we will explain the steps of how to bring your notes back to Spain, which we will later translate and and make them ready to submit.
